Dr. Gregory Cox earned his degrees from Rutgers and Hahnemann University, training at the highest academic level and receiving top honors. He was chief resident during his ophthalmology residency and went on to complete a fellowship in cornea and refractive surgery at the renowned Anheuser-Busch Eye Institute at St. Louis University. During cataract surgery, Dr. Cox will replace the clouded natural lens with an intraocular lens (IOL). There are several types of IOLs available, and choosing the right one can impact how well you see afterward and how dependent you'll be on glasses. Basic fixed-focus lenses, known as standard lenses or monofocal lenses offer excellent correction for one distance, often for distance vision, but most people still need glasses for reading or computer work. For those with astigmatism, there are toric lenses that can correct it at the time of surgery.
Many patients take the opportunity to correct their presbyopia with multifocal lenses, so that they can ditch those pesky reading glasses. These lenses, sometimes called lifestyle lenses are premium lens implants that are designed to provide a broader range of focus, helping many patients see clearly at near, intermediate, and far distances with little or no need for glasses.
