What is Strabismus?

Strabismus is a visual condition where the eyes do not align properly, causing them to point in different directions. This misalignment occurs due to a disruption in the control of eye movements by the brain or issues with eye muscles and structures.

Strabismus can manifest in several ways:

  1. Esotropia: One or both eyes turn inward towards the nose.
  2. Exotropia: One or both eyes turn outward, away from the nose.
  3. Hypertropia: One eye is positioned higher than the other.
  4. Hypotropia: One eye is positioned lower than the other.

The misalignment can be constant or intermittent, and it might affect one or both eyes. Strabismus can develop in childhood and persist into adulthood or can occur later in life due to various factors.

Understanding The Symptoms

The most prominent and noticeable symptom of strabismus is the misalignment of the eyes. In older children, additional signs and symptoms may include:

  • Abnormal 3-D vision
  • Blurry vision
  • Double vision
  • Eye strain
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Head tilt or abnormal head position
